To test a power supply, you need to know the basic power supply concept or the basic electronics but I know you already studied the basics.

In testing power supply, you need to check first the visual appearance of the PCB.

1. Check for burnt or bloated parts or capacitor & check all fuses if they are not open.
2. Most of the  power supply design is already have fuse, or protective parts that isolate the main supply when there is a spike or faulty components or semiconductor parts in the circuit some advance design of power supply already have a watchdog, as they called that can sense a faulty supply and shutdown the circuit or automatically to isolate the main power encase of faulty circuit.
3. Use a Digital Multimeter " put it to resistance check :  to check if there is a supply that is shorted or nearly shorted to ground.
